English Curriculum Intent

The Glebe Farm English Department endeavours to create articulate, creative and reflective learners. We believe the study of English supports pupils to develop socially, emotionally, culturally and intellectually through their exploration of our rich heritage of stories to inform our understanding of the world around us. Our thematic curriculum guides pupils through the rich historical and cultural significance of the tradition of storytelling and the enduring power of language: from the origins of sense making stories to the power of language today in our fast-paced, diverse world. A rich and ambitious variety of texts exposes pupils to the evolution, purpose and significance of storytelling from a range of forms, genres and periods.

Our engaging and varied choice of texts inspire and promote a love and appreciation of reading for pleasure. Knowledge intersperses with skill, to support pupils to become insightful, critical readers and controlled, creative writers. Our thematic curriculum develops conceptual schemas that encourages students to see patterns, appreciate deep layers of meaning and make connections across literature, language and media. Engaging and relevant thematic texts inspire learners to develop a command of writing in a range of forms and genres.

We recognise the ability to communicate effectively, confidently and with clarity is crucial in school and beyond. Opportunities are created for learners to develop a strong command of the spoken word to discuss and debate ideas in a safe and inclusive environment; we firmly believe in these opportunities to build confidence and a sense of belonging. We guide pupils to become confident, articulate and sophisticated communicators preparing our learners to become successful, valuable and socially responsible citizens.
